Game 9 Clippers 5 Vipers 2

The effort was better a night removed from a 3-0 loss in Powell River.  Unfortunately for the Vipers this would be a night where the hockey gods were not on the Vernon side as they fell 5-2 to the Clippers.

The Vipers would find themselves behind the eight ball early as Will Reilly scored on a point shot just 57 seconds into the game.  The Vipers did a nice job of not letting that goal get them down as the started to move the puck well and generate some chances.  The shots ended 11-10 in the opening period with the home side retaining a 1-0 lead.

The Vipers had a good start to the second period and the fourth line was rewarded for their hard work as Joey Cipollone converted on a pass from behind the net to tie the game up at 1.  The momentum remained on the Viper side until a stretch pass from the Clippers had Lucas Finner go in on a breakaway and he was impeded before getting a shot away and was awarded a penalty shot.  Finner made a nice move to score and make it 2-1.  Late in the second period Chris Dodero would outwait Shortridge then score on the wrap around to make it 3-1 Nanaimo after 2 periods.

The third period left a lot to be desired in terms of entertaining hockey.  It was penalty after penalty after penalty that slowed the flow of what was overall a good hockey game.  Kudos to the Clippers who took full advantage when they were on the powerplay as Matt Hoover swept a puck from the circle through a lot of traffic to make it 4-1.  The Vipers were able to capitalize on a powerplay of their own as Riley Brandt would make it 4-2.  Another powerplay for the homeside had a favourable bounce, find the stick of Corey Renwick and he would make no mistake to make it 5-2.  Things got nasty late as Devin Brosseau was assessed a butt ending penalty and a fighting major as Riley Brandt would come in and stick up for his teammate.  No more goals scored the rest of the way and the Clippers would take the game 5-2.

After a dud in Powell River the night before this was a better effort.  The game was up for grabs, but for the Vipers it wasn't meant to be.

Something to take away from this game is that this team is still trying to find its way.  They at times can blow teams away, but at other times struggle to maintain any sort of consistency.

They would make a final stop on this road trip in Victoria on Sunday afternoon at the Q Centre.
